Incineration Plant & Fujimae Higata Trip
Our Grade 6/7 Designers had an opportunity to learn about how garbage is disposed of in Nagoya as part of our unit on sustainability. We were surprised by the mountain of garbage and just how much waste one city makes each day. We were also surprised to find out that burning garbage creates electricity which is sold back to the city for our use.
We followed up our visit to a place nearby called Fujimae Higata. A sand flats area that is a key location in the globe for migratory birds. This place was saved by Nagoya residents from becoming a landfill. Concerned citizens gathered and reduced city garbage through recycling initiatives so that a landfill was no longer needed. We learned a lot and had a great time with our friends too.
